NJ police dog killed trying to apprehend suspect

The hunt continues for a robbery suspect who authorities say killed a New Jersey police dog by throwing it into traffic.

Gloucester Township police say the 3 1/2-year-old German Shepherd known as Schultz was trying to apprehend the man on the shoulder of Route 42 around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

As the dog began to make the apprehension, police say the man grabbed the animal and tossed him onto the roadway where it was struck. The suspect ran off.

Police Chief Harry Earle says the man was one of two people suspected of robbing a local restaurant. Both suspects were later taken into custody .

Charges have not yet been filed.
