Authorities say a New Jersey man used an electronic device stolen from a supermarket to fraudulently load thousands of dollars onto blank gift cards then sold them for a profit.

Fifty-six-year-old Juan M. Perez of Elizabeth has been charged with receiving stolen property and two counts of theft. He was being held Wednesday in the Union County Jail on $180,000 bail.

Linden police Detective Lt. James Sarnicki told the Home News Tribune of East Brunswick that Perez stole the device in May and somehow obtained a store password that enabled him to use it.

Over several months, Perez allegedly applied nearly $80,000 to cards using money from the supermarket's accounts.

It was not immediately known if Perez had retained a lawyer.
