Queens student arrested for doodling on desk

A few innocent words were written in erasable ink, Alexa Gonzalez says. She scribbled "Lex was here 2/1/10" on her desk Monday at Junior High School 190 in Queens. She also wrote "I love my friends Abby and Faith."

Now the 12 year old author will never forget the horrifying experience they led to.

"They told me I could get arrested for this," she said.

And she did.

The principal called police, who placed her in handcuffs and took her across the street to police precinct.

"I got a call that my daughter had been arrested for graffiti," her mother, Moraima Camacho, said.

Gonzalez was suspended, went to family court, and was assigned eight hours of community service, a book report and an essay on what she's learned from the experience.

Now both the Police Department and the Department of Education say Gonzalez never should have been handcuffed and taken to the precinct.

In a written statement the Department of Education admits this was wrong saying, "The principal made a mistake and has lifted the suspension. The girl is returning to classes. The principal also is reaching out to the parent."

"They shouldn't be taking our kids to jail," Camacho said.

Gonzalez says she won't doodle on her desk again.
