Man killed by NJ Transit train

December 27, 2009 11:53:59 AM PST
An empty New Jersey Transit train on its way to New York struck a vehicle that somehow got stuck on the tracks early Sunday, killing the man inside. The Jeep was not at a designated railroad crossing when the crash occurred around 5:20 a.m. in Clifton, said NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel. The engineer activated the train's brakes but could not stop in time.

It appears that the vehicle left the road shortly before the crash and went through some trees before landing on the tracks, but an investigation is continuing.

Killed in the accident was James Brown, a 34-year-old Passaic resident.

The train was traveling toward Suffern, N.Y., where it was to begin its route on the Main Line. The accident caused minimal service delays.
