Bill would move Nets to Newark, cost ticketholders

An influential lawmaker wants the New Jersey Nets to move to Newark's Prudential Center and would impose a surcharge on tickets there and at the Izod Center. The deal proposed by state Senate President Richard Codey would change the roles of the two northern New Jersey arenas and keep them from competing.

Under his plan, the Izod Center in East Rutherford would become a venue for concerts and family shows while the Newark arena would focus on sports.

Ticketholders would be subject to a new fee of up to $3.

Some lawmakers and Gov.-elect Chris Christie have opposed new taxes on tickets.

The bill could be discussed by a Senate committee on Jan. 4.
