Rally to stop the violence in Newark

August 19, 2009 3:58:20 PM PDT
A large demonstration against crime and violence is planned in Newark tonight. It has been a violent summer in New Jersey's largest city and a coalition of activists is vowing to fight back.

They will hold an anti-violence rally at the Garden Spires Apartments. They plan to march to First and Orange Streets where they intend to stop traffic at the ramps to Interstate 280.

The number of people wounded by gunfire and killed by street violence in Newark is up from last summer.

Police records show 76 people were shot from July 1 to August 13. That compares with 55 during the same period a year ago and a four-year average of 76. The city has had 11 homicides during the period compared to 10 last year.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow urged residents on Wednesday to provide authorities with information on those involved in illegal drugs, saying it accounts for most street violence.
