Search for answers in Taconic crash

November 15, 2009 7:43:22 PM PST
One day after saying tearful goodbyes to his wife, daughter and three nieces, Dan Schuler spoke with state police. Investigators are searching for something to help them understand why Schuler drove the wrong way down the Taconic State Parkway last Sunday afternoon causing a fiery wreck that killed 8 people.

Schuler told police there were no signs anything was wrong with his 36-year-old wife as they left Hunter Lake Campground in Sullivan County.

Police have also determined Schuler last used her cell phone about a half hour before the crash. She called her brother saying she was disoriented and having trouble seeing. After that, investigators believe that she dumped her phone. A log shows several missed calls miles away from the crash, officials said.

Police are awaiting a toxicology report to see if it will provide some medical explanation for what has been a difficult case for all involved.

Officials in Westchester County say they will also check signs at entrance and exit ramps along the Taconic State Parkway.

They plan to check signs next week at the Bronx River, Saw Mill, Hutchinson, and Cross County parkways. Officials say they will be checking to make sure the signs clearly show the direction of traffic.

Schuler was driving the wrong way when she crashed into an SUV. Along with Schuler and four children killed in her vehicle, the three Yonkers men in the SUV also died.

A Saturday funeral is planned for 81-year-old Michael Bastardi and his son, 49-year-old Guy Bastardi. A Monday funeral will be held at the same church for 74-year-old Daniel Longo.
