State GOP proposes suspending gas tax

April 30, 2008 6:35:52 PM PDT
As gas prices soar to new records daily, Republican state lawmakers are calling for the suspension of the state's gasoline tax as a way to cut the price at the pumps by more than 30 cents a gallon. The move is being criticized by some as an election-year proposal that does nothing long-term to address the rising price of gasoline. But some state lawmakers say their proposal would give New Yorkers a much-needed break at the pumps.

Republicans in the Senate and Assembly called for cutting the local, state and federal taxes on gasoline Wednesday, saying such a move could save $10 a fill-up. The lawmakers want to suspended the taxes from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

However, the proposed suspension could create a $500 million hole in state finances, already shaken by a likely recession, and would face opposition in the Democrat-controlled Assembly.

The state's gasoline tax is 32.4 cents a gallon.

The Assembly's Democratic majority noted that suppliers could simply raise prices, negating the savings.

Dan Weiller, spokesman for Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, says record-high gas prices are the fault of the Republican Bush administration and a federal remedy is needed.
